Total Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant, Such joint replacement orthopaedic surgery is generally conducted to relieve arthritis pain or to replace the damaged hip joint due to rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, post traumatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and certain hip fractures. A total hip replacement consists of replacing both the acetabulum and the femoral head. Hip replacement is currently one of the most common orthopaedic operations. The aims of the procedure are pain relief and improvement in hip function. Hip replacement is usually considered only after other therapies, such as physical therapy and pain medications, have recently failed.
Partial hip replacement, also called hip hemiarthroplasty, is a surgical procedure where only the femoral head (the ball) of the damaged hip joint is replaced. The acetabulum (the socket) is not replaced. This surgery is usually done in old patients with fracture neck of femur. This surgery is most often done to repair certain types of hip fractures.
Total Knee replacement is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability. It is most commonly performed for osteoarthritis, and also for other knee diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and post traumatic arthritis. Debilitating pain from osteoarthritis is much more common in the elderly. In general, the surgery consists of replacing the diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components shaped to allow continued motion of the knee.
A complex fracture is when the bone is broken into many pieces and the surrounding tissue is also damaged leading to bone exposure. This can cause joint dislocation and loss of bone fragments. Complex fractures are very complicated and are completely different from normal fractures. That’s why it’s important for Orthopaedics surgeon to provide a specialized treatment plan. Because complex fractures are very painful and difficult to recover from, it’s crucial that the treatment plan is carefully designed and well thought out.
Bone fractures in children are different from adult bone fractures because a child’s bones are still growing and if properly not managed can affect the child in his or her growth. A child’s bones heal faster than an adult’s because of thicker and stronger periosteum which covers the surface of their bones. Treatment for a fracture follows a simple rule: the bones have to be aligned correctly and prevented from moving out of place until the bones are healed. Because children are still growing, their injuries need different evaluation, and sometimes different treatment.
